Objective To evaluate and compare the optic disc size of normal and glaucoma patients over the age of 40 years old. Design a population-based cross-sectional survey. The study population originated from the population-based eye disease survey in Beijing and evaluated the clear fundus photographs of subjects over 40 years of age, including 3918 normal subjects and 135 primary glaucoma. Methods All subjects underwent visual examination, slit lamp, fundus photography and other eye examinations. The independent sample t-test was used to compare the size of optic disc in both normal and glaucoma groups. The main indicators measure the vertical diameter and horizontal diameter of the optic disc, calculate the average disc diameter and optic disc area. Results The diameter of the optic disc in normal subjects was (1 97 ± 0 19) mm, the horizontal diameter was (1 78 ± 0 18) mm, the average diameter was (1 87 ± 0 17) mm and the optic disc area was (2 77 ± 0 5) 1) mm2 (1 4 2 ~ 6 4 2mm2). The average diameter of small discs ≤ 1 6 1mm, the average diameter of large discs ≥ 2 15mm, the average diameter of the optic disc between the two. The vertical diameter of glaucoma optic disc was (1 93 ± 0 2 0) mm, the horizontal diameter was (1 83 ± 0 2 4) mm, the mean diameter was (1 88 ± 0 2 0) mm and the optic disc area was (2 80 ± 0 5 9) mm2 (1 6 3 ~ 5 0 3mm2). There was no significant difference in mean optic disc diameter (P = 0 6 7) and optic disc area (P = 0 52) between normal and glaucoma patients. Conclusion The size of the optic disc in the crowd is quite variable. There is no significant difference in the optic disc size between the normal and glaucoma patients.
