1937年抗日战争全面爆发,翌年广州即面临沦陷,中山大学农林植物研究所所长陈焕镛为保存该所珍贵物品,自行将标本、图书、仪器迁移至香港九龙,以策安全。1941年12月8日太平洋战争爆发,日军又进犯香港,植物所被封锁。汪伪政府广东省教育厅长林汝珩为拉拢学界名流,为伪政府服务,特来植物所,与陈焕镛面商,劝其率领全体职员及眷属回穗,其可以协助,将公物运回。回广州之后,研究所相对独立,可继续从事研究。陈焕镛遂决定与伪政府合作。陈焕镛在抗战之后被指控为汉奸,引发一段诉讼案。对此案广东省高等法院最终作出免于起诉处分。
