作为５０年代我国外交战线的领导人，张闻天在国际问题和外交政策方面提出了一系列丰富而独到的见解：在和平与战争的关系问题上，他认为战争是可以避免的，和平的可能性要大于战争；和平共处五项原则不仅适用于社会制度不同的国家，也适用于社会制度相同的国家；战后民族独立运动和民族主义国家属于人类进步力量；外交工作必须致力于建立国际和平统一战线；对外关系上应坚持民族平等原则；勤俭办外交，对外援助要量力而行。
