The synthesis and catabolism of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in Schistosoma japo-nicum were studied in view of its excitatory effect on the neuromuscular system of S.japonicum. The results showed that S. japonicum has an active 5-hydroxytryptophandecarboxylase and two types of monoamine oxidase. The 5-hydroxytryptophan decar-boxylase activity (expressed as nanomoles of 5-HT produced per mg protein per hour)
