在乌鲁木齐生活久了,你就会发现这是一座典型的混血城市。单从一些很有意思的地名上来看,就可以断定居住在这里的人们,除了那些土生土长的原住民,还有来自天南地北的移民,而且时间非常久远。就以坐落于城南水源地的乌拉泊古城而言,“建于唐代沿用至元,是乌鲁木齐现存时代最早的古城遗址”(引自乌拉泊古城全国重点文物保护单位刻立碑文)。据一些专家考证,这就是历史上赫赫有名的古轮台税城,由此联想到边塞诗人岑参的诗句:
