Chen Zengshou’s “Old Moon Poems” is worth noting in the selection of many words in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China. The preface of this essay has many unique opinions on word selection criteria, reader acceptance and controversial authors, works evaluation and other wordology propositions, which reflects the author’s poetic viewpoints of harmony, independence and importance. Due to the special connection between Chen Zengshou and Zhu Zu-min, there are quite a lot of differences between “Old Moon-yan” and “Song-hundred”, both of which have similar features and different strengths. Chen’s choice of words is biased towards the principle of ’unwinding’, which not only achieves the unique value of his choice of words but also creates some unavoidable limitations.
