宦官是中国古代皇权制度的特有产物,由来已久。东汉光武帝以后,宦官成为被阉割后在后宫为帝王及后妃服务的男人的专称。在中国历史上,各代宦官称谓有所不同,“寺人”是宦官最早的称谓。《诗经》云:“未见君子,寺人之令。”①寺人的称谓早在西周时代即已出现,当时中国境内尚无佛教,更无僧人,因而也不可能存在两者模拟得名的情形。古代“寺”与“侍”两字
