在整个解放战争中,广大民兵在“一切为了前线,一切为了胜利”的口号鼓舞下,踊跃参军参战,积极支援前线,主动配合人民解放军作战,为夺取解放战争的胜利做出了巨大的贡献,在中国民兵历史上写下了最光辉的篇章。在3年多的时间里,民兵参加大小战斗11.4775万次,参战民兵228.4861万人次,歼敌20.4727万名。民兵组织在战火的洗礼中迅速发展,从解放战争初期的220万人,发展到解放战争末期的550多万人,此外还有几千万农民自卫军。战争的硝烟虽早已散尽,但是随军转战南北的数百万民兵支前大军滚滚车流声在耳边回荡,“父送子、妻送郎”参军参战的动人情景还历历在目,民兵的英雄形象和英勇事迹还在记忆深处浮现……
