Objective To investigate the expression and clinical significance of E-cadherin and vimentin in human gastric adenocarcinoma tissues and their relationship with CD44 and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Methods The expressions of CD44, E-cadherin and vimentin in 95 cases of gastric adenocarcinoma were detected by immunohistochemical Envision staining. The relationship between CD44, E-cadherin and vimentin was analyzed by Spearman rank correlation analysis. . Results The expression of CD44 in gastric adenocarcinoma was significantly higher than that in adjacent normal tissues. The stronger the expression of CD44 was, the lower the degree of differentiation was and the more the lymph node metastasis occurred. Spearman rank correlation analysis showed that the expression of CD44 was negatively correlated with E-cadherin level and positively correlated with vimentin level. Conclusion The enhanced expression of CD44 in gastric adenocarcinoma promotes the EMT of cancer cells and is closely related to the lymph node metastasis.
