Objective To understand the iodine nutrition of infants and children aged 0 ~ 11 years along Hongze Lake in Huai’an City and the changes of iodine nutrition after the adjustment of salt iodine content in 2012. Methods The samples of 0 ~ 11-year-old infants and children along six counties (districts) of Hongze Lake were sampled and monitored continuously for six years since 2009. The urine samples were tested for their iodine nutrition status and the salt and iodine content of residents were monitored. Results In 2009-2014, the qualified rate of iodized salt and the rate of qualified iodized salt were all over 98%. From 2009 to 2012, the average salt iodine value of households was> 30 mg / kg. After adjustment of salt iodine content, the average salt iodine value of households in 2013-2014 decreased significantly, reaching 25.8 and 25.2 mg / kg respectively. The median urinary iodine concentrations of 2,400 infants and children aged 0-11 years tested during 2009-2014 were 238.2, 244.8, 237.4, 166.4, 158.6 and 139.2 μg / L, respectively, and the total population of all age groups 2012 The median urinary iodine in 2014 was lower than that of 2009-2011, with a significant difference (P <0.01). The urinary iodine median of children aged 7-11 years old during 2009-2011 was> 200μg / L, which exceeded the appropriate amount. The median of urinary iodine in 2012-2014 was in the range of 100-200μg / L. Conclusions After the standard adjustment of salt iodine content, the salt iodine content of residents in Hongze Lake area decreased obviously, and the median of urinary iodine in children aged 7 ~ 11 dropped to the suitable range.
