When there is failure. If they fail, they tend to blame the annoying reasons, such as strategic mistakes, inadequate marketing, competitive threats and technical errors. However, these are merely appearances of the problem. All leaders make the same fundamental mistake of succumbing to some kind of temptation, unnecessarily complicating the situation, over-emphasizing certain details and undermining personal leadership. Because leaders are unwilling to face and overcome these temptations, what they do sets the enterprise at risk. These temptations include: choosing status rather than work outcomes; choosing personal prestige rather than responsibility; choosing the right decision rather than clear instructions; choosing a surface harmony rather than an argument; choosing flawless but not trustful alternatives.
