日本于江户幕府时代(1603~1867)末期,打破闭关自守,开始国际交往,开放以横浜为首的五个港口,并开设了侨居地。侨居地就是与日本缔结条约国家的人在此居住,并允许开展经济活动的区域,分别设在函馆、新泻、横浜、神户、长崎。侨居地内,贸易商社、邮船会社、银行等外国商馆林立,剧场、教会、各种俱乐部等社交场所众多。以这种侨居地社会的形成为背景,在横浜设立了日本日报社(Japan Gazette Office)、日本先驱报社
At the end of the Edo Shogunate era (1603 ~ 1867), Japan broke through its restrictions and started international exchanges. It opened five ports headed by Yokohama and set up overseas residences. The place of residence is the area where people living in treaty countries with Japan concluded the treaty and are allowed to carry out economic activities. They are located in Hakodate, Niigata, Yokohama, Kobe and Nagasaki respectively. There are many social venues for foreign merchants, such as trading houses, shipping companies, banks, banks, theaters, churches and various clubs in the area of residence.
