邓小平与张学良虽然从来也不曾见面，可是，他们彼此却神交已久。彼此对对方都有强烈的好感。邓小平生前多次希望能在北京会见张学良这位民族英雄，并且在张学良恢复自由前去美国探亲以后，他曾亲自安排吕正操前往美国，欢迎张学良返回祖国大陆。张学良本人也十分希望返回祖国
