Periodontitis is a chronic infectious disease caused by dental plaque microorganisms. Plaque stimulation triggers the host’s immune inflammatory response, eventually leading to the destruction of periodontal support tissues. Periodontitis is an extremely complex and multifactorial disease that has a two-way effect on many systemic diseases. Toll-like receptors (TLRs), as a class of pathogen pattern recognition receptors, activate the innate immune system by identifying patterns of pathogen-related molecules that stimulate the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and biological regulators. Studies have shown that TLRs plays an important role in maintaining periodontal health and the development of periodontal disease. This article reviews the research on the correlation between TLRs and periodontal disease.
