元曲开创了中国戏曲史上的第一个高峰,然而,《元史》对元代曲家只字不提。《四库全书》文学作品中的诗、文都归于附属性的集部,词、曲类的地位就更是卑微了。四库馆臣有判词云:“词、曲二体,在文章、技艺之间,厥品颇卑,作者弗贵。”~①由此可知,戏曲的作者都属于“弗贵”行列,扮演戏曲者的地位就更卑贱了。这种状况一直延续到民国初年,从齐如山与梅兰芳的初识过程便可以窥其一斑。齐、梅二人两年之内通信百余封,却始终没正式谋面,就连如何称呼梅兰芳都让齐如山费尽
