For any one who grew up in Western Europe during the Cold War, the Russians were only a little closer to the Martians. There are stereotypes about this country: gymnasts, soldiers, and thin-minded members of the Politburo. As the country closed itself up, the outside world could not easily deal with the Russians. Now, however, the Russians are back: you can see them all at the beach in Cyprus, the ski slopes in Switzerland, and the real estate market in London. Very grateful real estate developers call the wealthy Russian buyers “new Saudis.”
