汉江机床厂遵照毛主席关于“独立自主、自力更生”的教导，加强科学试验，不断登攀新高峰，研制出了具有世界先进水平的高精度机床──新型万能螺纹磨床。在这方面，他们的经验是：在试验研究取得成果的基础上进行设计，试制；样机出来后对存在的问题进行试验，修改设计；小批试制后再进行生产考验；在证明可靠的情况下，最后投入生产。这种做法是符合“实践、认识、再实践、再认识”的认识论规律的，是发展水平高、难度大的精密机床的一个可靠的途径。
