In an effort to increase system spin sensitivity, El Segundo Aerospace, California, used a linear array of 1728 charge-coupled devices (CCDs) to detect fiber-optic gyroscope outputs. Fiber optic gyros have many advantages over spin-quality gyros, which measure the rate of rotation with inherently infinite dynamic range. It has no moving parts and is therefore more reliable. People eventually expect the gyro to be as small as a roll of wire, just a few bucks, cheap and suitable for mass production.
