港脚商在早期中英关系史上占有重要地位,他们是鸦片走私贩子,又是最早把英国的棉纺织品带到中国市场的自由商人,他们的贸易活动改变了由东印度公司和中国广州公行两个贸易垄断组织所构成的中英贸易格局,给予英国政府的对华政策以深刻的影响,并最终引起了鸦片战争。
Hong Kong and China Merchants took an important part in the early history of Sino-British relations. They were opiate smugglers and the earliest free traders to bring British cotton textiles to the Chinese market. Their trade activities have changed the course of trade between East India Company and Guangzhou The Sino-British trade pattern formed by the two trade monopolies gave the British government a profound impact on China’s policy and eventually triggered the Opium War.
