The results of 8 years of low-alloy steel exposure on various river-level railway bridges show that the main environmental factor that leads to serious corrosion on the river-level railway bridges is the emission of SO2 from running locomotives. The corrosion rate of steel increases with the deposition rate of SO2 in the environment. The corrosion resistance of low carbon steel containing Mn increases toward or worse than that of general carbon steel as the exposure time prolongs.
