吴湖帆以书画、赏鉴和收藏名世,尽管性格有世家子弟之风,但严于择友的同时却与叶恭绰和黄般若等粤籍学人有深厚的交往。吴氏1934年为黄氏画《黄石斋图》,缘于各人对古物的爱好,“黄忠端公道周画”成了看不见的因缘;而叶恭绰自1928年与吴氏相交后,相互砥砺,吴氏亦参加过叶氏推动的文化艺术活动,叶氏更将吴氏比为“画中九友”一员。本文以文献为切入点,致力重构吴湖帆与黄般若的往还点滴,以及指明叶恭绰致吴湖帆若干信札的年份,从而展现吴湖帆与黄般若,叶恭绰与吴湖帆于上世纪三、四十年代的往还一角,以及叶恭绰撰写《后画中九友歌》时吴湖帆的身影。
