1. Two spirits1 live in the mountain. One day， they argue with each other. The blue-bearded spirit says， “Money means everything. Nothing succeeds without money.”
山上住着两个小精灵。有一天，他们发生了争执。蓝胡子精灵说：“世上有了金钱就有了一切，没有金钱什么事都不会成功的。”
2. The red-bearded spirit says， “No， money comes after success. If you don’t believe me， let’s make a bet2.” They meet a poor man. The blue-bearded spirit gives him fifty gold coins and asks him to buy success.
红胡子精灵说：“不对，只有事情成功了才会有钱。你若不信，我们来打赌。”他们遇到一个穷汉，蓝胡子精灵给了他五十金币，叫他去买“成功”。
3. The poor man leaves with the money. On the way he meets a woman. The woman says， “Buy success with the money？ It would be better to buy a string3 of beef lungs4 for your children.” The poor man thinks it right. He buys a string of beef lungs， puts the rest coins in his cap and walks towards home.
穷汉拿着钱走了，半路上碰到一位妇女，妇女说：“用钱买‘成功’吗？还不如买挂牛肺给孩子们吃呢！”穷汉觉得有理，买了一挂牛肺，把其余的金币藏在帽子里，往家走去。
4. Suddenly， a crow flies over. The poor man hurriedly hides the beef lungs in his clothes. But the crow runs away with the cap in its mouth. The poor man runs after the crow. But now a dog jumps up， and grabs5 away the beef lungs in the clothes.
忽然，飞来一只乌鸦，穷汉急忙把牛肺藏在衣服里，谁知乌鸦叼走了帽子。穷汉追赶乌鸦，不料一条狗窜上来，把衣服里的牛肺抢走了。
5. The poor man gets nothing. He arrives home dejectedly6 and still lives a poor life. The two spirits come again. The red-bearded spirit says to the poor man，“My success falls into the river. Pull it out for me， please. OK？”
穷汉什么也没得到，垂头丧气地回了家，依旧过他的穷日子。两个小精灵又来了。红胡子精灵对穷汉说：“我的‘成功’掉在河里，请你帮我捞上来，好吗？”
6. The poor man comes to the river. He thinks hard for a long time， and then has got a good idea. He works as an employee7 in a shop. After he makes some money， he buys some net ropes and goes back home to weave8 the fishing net.
穷汉来到河边，想了很久，想出了一个打捞“成功”的办法。他到铺子里当雇工，挣了钱后，买了一些网绳，回家编织鱼网。
7. He goes to the river and casts9 the fishing net. Nine days passes， but he doesn’t get success.
鱼网织好了，他到河边去撒网。一连撒了九天，也没捞到“成功”。
8. His skill of casting nets becomes better and better. On the tenth day， he gets a little gold fish.
他撒网的技术越来越好。第十天他拉起网一看，捞到一条小金鱼。
9. He takes the fish home and cuts its open. Ah， a brilliant gem10 is in the stomach of the fish.
他把小金鱼拿回家，剖开鱼肚子一看，哈，里面有块亮闪闪的宝石。
10. He goes on fishing， and has more and more money. He builds a house. One day， the king passes by and meets him.
他继续打鱼，渐渐有了钱，盖起了房子。一天，国王经过这里，遇到了他。
11. He shows the gem to the king. The king takes the gem and awards11 a big piece of land to him.
他把宝石给国王看。国王拿走宝石，把一大片土地赏给了他。
12. The poor man becomes successful by his own labour. The blue-bearded spirit has to admit12 the red-bearded spirit’s words are right.
穷汉靠自己的劳动取得了成功。蓝胡子精灵只好承认红胡子精灵的话是对的。
