The South East Anatolia Project (GAP) is a large-scale water management project that includes the construction of 22 dams and 19 hydroelectric power stations aimed at boosting domestic electricity generation in Turkey and developing irrigated agriculture on a large scale. Although the area has benefited greatly from it, the project has also had a significant impact on the environment. The Coruh River, the longest river in the eastern part of the Black Sea, has a huge hydropower reserve and has a very important economic value to Turkey. The Klu River project plans to build 27 dams and hydropower stations. These dams may have serious repercussions on the environment in Upper Turkey as well as downstream Georgia. Through scientific research and analysis, the actual water demand of each littoral country can be determined so that transboundary water resources can be used in a fair, rational and optimal manner. The economic, ecological and social issues brought by the project should be accurately evaluated on the basis of the assessment report on environmental impact and cumulative effect.
