Protein kinase C (PKC) is the receptor for the tumor-initiating factor 12-0-+tetra-alkanoyl-anthraquinone 13-acetic acid (TPA), and TPA has an astounding effect on the proliferation and differentiation of various cells, indicating that PKC Activation is the main signal of these cells. Some hormones, such as growth factors and neural mediators, also interact with membrane receptors, triggering two coordinated signaling pathways in which PKC activation and Ca 2+ transfer are important intermediate signals. These hormones hydrolyze phosphatidylinositol 2-phosphate (PIP_2) to inositol 3-phosphate (IP_3), which mobilizes cellular calcium and diacylglycerol (DG), and DG reactivates PKC.
