Active glycolytic metabolism is a significant biochemical feature of malignant cells. Even under aerobic conditions, malignant cell glycolytic metabolism is still significantly active, this special biochemical phenotype, known as the Warburg effect. The Warburg effect has been clinically used to diagnose malignant tumors by positron emission tomography (PET), and exploration of strategies for treating malignant tumors by interfering with the glycolysis metabolic pathways is of concern. This review summarizes the mechanism of active glycolysis in malignant tumor cells and the role of War-burg in the diagnosis and targeted therapy of malignant tumors.
