Since its opening in 1841, Hong Kong has evolved from a small fishing village into an international trading harbor city and has become a prosperous commercial metropolis. Hong Kong consists of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon Peninsula, the interior hinterland of the New Territories and 262 large and small islands (outlying islands).
