《史记·孟子荀卿列传》中墨子事迹仅 24 字。但从社会影响的角度看,西汉时期墨家的社会影响依旧很大,应当立长篇传记;从传世资料的角度看,西汉时期墨家传世资料也很丰富,可以立长篇传记;从史书作者的角度看,司马迁受其父影响而重视墨家且对墨家资料掌握丰富,理应写作长篇墨家传记;且据《史记·太史公自序》“猎儒墨之遗文”看,《史记·孟子荀卿列传》中本当像写孟子、荀子那样,有介绍墨家思想学说的较长文字,但今本却无。究其原因,当是原有较长的墨子传记,但因在《孟子荀卿列传》篇末,竹简散断而佚失致残。今本《孟子荀卿列传》文末文义未足、文气骤止、无“太史公曰”不合体例等,皆为其证。

The reason, when it is the original longer Mozi biography, but because in the “Mencius Xun Qing Biography” the end of the bamboo slips and lost and disabled. The present “Mencius Xun Qing Biography” at the end of the text is not enough literary meaning, abstinence, no “Taishi Gongyue” incompatibility, are all their cards.
