A research team led by Peter Edwards appears to have made the chemistry textbook a definition of metals - elements that form positive ions in solution - untenable. Edwards of Cambridge University, together with his collaborators Sarah Guy and Dolores Hotton, and William McFarlane of the London College of Technology, succeeded in making sodium in the form of an anion of Na ~ -. Alkali metal (such as sodium) exists in gaseous form of negative ions, as early as 1948 has already been found. However, the existence of a true alkali anion in solution has not been proved. Edward’s team dissolved sodium in a solvent of hexamethylphosphoric triamide (HMPA) under vacuum. Sodium nuclei can be checked by nuclear magnetic resonance
