中国古代的美女观有一个从以瘦为美到以胖为美再到以中和为美的变化过程,曹雪芹对这三种美女观都有不同程度的认可,并将其与人物性格的塑造紧密联系在一起。他在塑造瘦美人时,更偏于精神气质追求、带有追慕魏晋风度之感,而丰腴美更多是体现了中晚唐以后中国社会渐渐世俗化的一面。然而,中和之美才是元明以来真正的现实美女观,清代则兼容并包而又对中和美较为推崇。曹雪芹是清代人,在作品中可以看出他对中和美的钟爱。
