Research by Quinn et al., MD, of Johns Hopkins University in the United States, shows that the higher the viral load in the serum of HIV-1 infected people, the greater the likelihood of transmitting the virus by heterosexuality. A 10-fold increase in HIV-1 RNA load multiplies the likelihood of transmission of the virus.
