莲花水电站大坝为混凝土面板堆石坝。大坝筑坝料主要选用溢洪道开挖料,不足部分由其它建筑物开挖料和石料场供应。初设阶段对溢洪道开控料进行了详查,既考虑了水工建筑物的要求又结合了面板堆石坝料场的特点布置勘测工作。主要查明堰体闸基和冲坑等部位覆盖层厚度、岩性、风化带厚度及岩脉、断层、裂隙发育情况等。技施阶段对开挖料进行了复查。施工阶段进行了分段分区控制开采。开挖料直接上坝,提高了开挖料的开采利用率和开采强度,节省了一次开采费用,降低了工程造价。
