竹王与夜郎王,是夜郎史研究许多重要问题中的两个关键词。如前所引,夜郎古国首载于《史记》,竹王神话首载于《华阳国志》,将夜郎王与竹王缝合在一起在正史是《后汉书》,之后历代汉文献皆将竹王与夜郎王视为同一体,夜郎古国的夜郎王/竹王一体化实际上成为一个特定概念的表述:夜郎一词更多表达的是政治共同体——国家,而竹王更多表达的是夜郎“民族”与夜郎王族世系,并衍生一个竹王祠(三郎庙),因而竹王则是一个国家与一个民族一体化的表述。于是就有了谁是竹王的后代
