British writer Horace Walpole (1717-1797) published the novel “Castle of Otranto” in 1764. The work is widely recognized as the first Gothic novel in Europe and has had a profound impact on later literature. Gothic novels, from a narrow perspective, are the originators of black novels. However, in a broad sense, they reflect the social and cultural phenomena in the same historical period.
