Industrial contact with manganese is initially in the form of inhalation. Exposure to manganese-laden air can cause chronic damage to the central nervous system, with symptoms similar to Parkinson’s disease. In 1837 Couper reported the first cases of manganese poisoning in Glasgow, where he observed these symptoms on five manganese miners. Since then, several authors have reported manganese poisoning cases. Exposure to airborne manganese dust also affects the lungs. The effect of manganese on the lungs, the literature is not as complete as the effects on the nerves, and the explanation for the toxicity of manganese to the lungs is very inconsistent.
