随着１９世纪下半叶大量华工涌入美国，中美两国间 的文化交流进入了新的历史时期。在长达近半个世纪的反华排华氛围下，反映主流意识形态 的美国强势文化对处于弱势的中华文化进行了十分明显的误征误现。这个时期美国的小说、 戏剧、诗歌里，出现了一批东方主义色彩十分浓厚的作品，集中展现了一个文化“他者”的 形象，这个形象至今仍然是美国主流意识形态的一部分。
As a large number of laborers poured into the United States in the second half of the 19th century, the cultural exchanges between China and the United States entered a new historical period. Under the anti-Chinese anti-Chinese antiquity atmosphere of nearly half a century, the strong American culture that reflects the mainstream ideology has made a very clear mistake in the weak Chinese culture. During the period of American novels, dramas and poetry, there appeared a series of highly orientalist works that concentrated on the image of the “other” of culture, which is still a part of the mainstream American ideology.
