Bilateral trade Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1990, Singapore and China have established contacts in many fields. After a short pause in the 1980s, bilateral trade has entered a period of steady growth. In 1994, the bilateral trade volume increased by 10% to 5.11 billion U.S. dollars, making China the 10th largest trading partner of Singapore and making Singapore the 8th largest trading partner of China. If we consider the re-export trade through Hong Kong, the bilateral trade volume between China and Singapore will be even more impressive. With the continuous growth of trade volume, China’s merchandise structure exported to Singapore has also undergone major changes. In the past, grain and light industry products accounted for a large proportion of export goods. In 1994, machinery and electronics accounted for 39.6% of exports. Other major export commodities include communications equipment, textiles, electronic products and petroleum products. During the same period, China’s imports of semi-finished products from Singapore for use in the chemical, mechanical, and electronics industries also increased significantly.
