环孢菌素可减轻或防止自身免疫性BB鼠的糖尿病发生。人类I型糖尿病确诊后如早期给予足量的环孢菌素可使病情缓解。一种强力的新免疫抑制剂FK506曾广泛用于器官移植中,能象环胞菌素那样抑制T细胞激活,其方式为通过抑制早期淋巴因子(例如白介素-2、白介素-3及γ-干扰素)的mRNA转录。作者为评定FK506对BB鼠糖尿病发病率的作用,将59只7窝BB鼠仔按性别配对随机分为3组,20只每日喂以自来水(对照组),19只每日喂以FK506 1mg/kg(小剂量组),20只每日喂以FK506 2mg/kg(大剂量组)。受治疗鼠年龄为30~120日龄。糖尿病诊断依据为糖尿(一周检测3次)及连续3天非空腹静脉血血糖高于200mg/dl。
