Elizabeth I (1533-1603) is a famous queen in British history. In office, she relied on the emerging aristocracy and the bourgeoisie to enforce autocratic rule. In her 45 years of rule, Britain has jumped from a fragmented, weak country to a world power. This period was the heyday of British history. Britain’s economy, military affairs, literature and art all reached an all-time high. Earl of Essex was Elizabeth’s petty minister, conspired to rebel because she was out of favor, and the Queen easily quelled the rebellion. There are many historical records of this story. This article is an excerpt from The Queen - My Opponent by Victoria Holt, UK (Chinese translation of this book will be published by World Intellectual Press). The first person in the book is Essex’s mother, whose narration gives the reader a glimpse of the lesser-known side of Queen Elizabeth, a historical figure.
