Objective To investigate the effects of mild hypothermia on changes of intracellular Ca2 +, Mg2 +, excitatory amino acids (EAA) and plasma endothelin (ET) after acute cerebral infarction in rats. Methods 48 Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into mild hypothermia group and control group. Each group was further divided into 4 subgroups, 6 in each subgroup. The middle cerebral artery occlusion Rats were treated with mild hypothermia, while the control group was not treated with mild hypothermia. Subgroups 1 were sacrificed at 1h, 2h, 4h and 8h after ischemia, respectively. The levels of Ca2 +, Mg2 +, EAA and plasma ET in the ischemic brain tissue were detected. Results The contents of Ca2 +, Mg2 +, EAA and ET in the ischemic brain tissue in mild hypothermia group increased only slightly with the prolongation of ischemic time and did not decrease obviously in Mg2 + The difference was significant (P <0.01). Conclusion Mild hypothermia can obviously prevent the increase of the content of Ca2 +, EAA and ET, and the decrease of protective factor Mg2 + in the ischemic brain tissue after cerebral ischemia in rats
