1928年托金氏确定植物机体中存有植物杀菌素,并证明一些植物中的杀菌素,具有杀菌、杀微生物、杀霉菌的作用;而另外一些,则对某型细菌有抑制繁殖的作用。蒜的杀菌力在历史上早已被证明,但我国除治疗痢疾有过报告外,其他方面特别是外科应用上的报告,尚属少见。托金氏曾指出蛋白性液特别是脓液,并不能保护细菌不受植物杀菌素的破坏,同时植物杀菌素还有促进皮肤创伤癒合的功效,因而其在外科化脓性创伤的治疗上是有相当价值的。
