U.S. Navy scientists have investigated a new type of cooling system, called a cryogenic cooler, for military satellite spaceborne detectors. The system uses sound waves for cooling, long service life and is more reliable than currently used systems and produces less vibration. Most conventional cooling systems use pistons or other devices to pressurize the liquid during cooling. Problems with piston sliding seals are the most common failures in space cooling systems.
