Electro-plated Co-Ni thin films are widely used as magnetic recording media. When compared with oxide coatings, it has the advantages of simple preparation and relatively easy access to a wide range of magnetic properties and film thicknesses. These advantages are extremely important in terms of magnetic recording because it has been shown that in order to increase the number of magnetic signals that can be stored in a given area, the film must be thin and have a high coercivity and a small magnetization area. There are several types of plating solutions that can be used to plate Co-Ni thin films. These include the Watts type (with Co ~ (++)), hypophosphite (including H_2PO_2 ~ -) and sulfamate.
