张为《主客图》在产生后即遭冷落而成残本。宋元时期它一度沉寂,在明代又因“流派划分”问题而遭学人贬责。后来清人从《唐诗纪事》中将其辑录出来,使它得以重见诗坛,并在当时风靡一时。有清一代,是《主客图》传播接受史上的兴盛期。清人对《主客图》的传播接受主要有仿效张为作图、以《主客图》寓风雅、关注《主客图》的产生与命名、关注诗派划分、借“主客”寓高下等十余种形式。
