OBJECTIVE: To compare the number of blood donors who have been hospitalized after a natural disaster with those of ordinary donors to explore how to better develop them into fixed blood donors under the condition of a significant increase in the number of blood donors after a natural disaster. Methods: The unpaid blood donors in our central mobile blood collection vehicle within 1 week after 2 natural disasters were compared with the same period one year later. Results: The number of blood donors increased significantly after the disaster, especially for the first blood donors. The number of blood donors was 72.12% and 70.19% respectively after the disaster, compared with 51.08% and 54.97% in the control group. Conclusion: The number of blood donations has doubled since the onset of the disaster. Establishing a continuous incentive policy to communicate with blood donors has the potential to turn them into blood donors.
