非洲是繁荣的雕刻之乡,无论是木雕、象牙雕还是石雕、陶雕、铜雕等,都以其多变的造型、质朴的风格引人瞩目。但提起非洲雕刻,最具代表性的是木雕,因为木雕是非洲分布最广、最具特色的一个艺术门类。据西非的部族头人讲,他们的祖先就是口衔刻刀来到人世的,而在南非的史前岩画中,也发现有佩戴面具跳舞的妇女形象。不过出于非洲暖湿气候及虫蛀的影响,保存数百年的木雕已不多见,珍品更是难得。非洲人民创造的艺术形式与他们的居住环境是密切相关
