Objective: To investigate the relationship between telomerase activity and benign and malignant lesions in human breast. Methods: Telomerase activity was detected in 15 benign breast lesions and 7 breast cancer tissues by TRAP-ELISA. Results: Of the 7 cases of invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast, 5 were positive for telomerase, while only 2 of 15 cases of benign breast disease were positive for telomerase. There was significant difference between the two groups (P <0.05). In addition, there was no significant difference in telomerase activity between breast cancer with lymph node metastasis and non-lymph node metastasis (P> 0.05). Conclusion: Activation of telomerase may play an important role in the development of human breast cancer, and telomerase may become a tumor marker for differential diagnosis of benign and malignant breast lesions and breast cancer
