Objective To evaluate the effect of vitamin E supplement on death of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases by Meta-analysis. Methods The databases of Pubmed, EMBASE, OVID, Healthstar, Cochrane database and Google Scholar were searched by computer to find out the literatures about randomized controlled trials about vitamin E supplementation and death of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases from 1980 to 2014 and to screen the eligible research. The outcome of the study was cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease deaths and total mortality. The effect indicators were relative risk (RR, 95% CI), which reflects the risk of death. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.1 software, and subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis were performed. Jadad scores were used in all literature for quality evaluation. Results A total of 11 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included in the study, with the exception of 2 lower quality articles, and the rest of the literature were of higher quality. Eleven studies showed that vitamin E had no effect on the death of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. RR = 1.00,95% CI (0.95 ~ 1.06); 11 studies showed no effect of vitamin E on total mortality RR = 1.02,95% CI 1.06). Subgroup analysis showed no significant effect of gender, follow-up time, presence or absence of other interventions, dose of vitamin E, and history of cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease. Conclusions Vitamin E supplementation did not increase the risk of cardiovascular death and total mortality.
