Surface analysis of a H 2O 2-bleached thermomechanical pulp (BTMP) exposed to light irradiation were carried out by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to characterize the photochemical reactions on surfaces of the pulps. The XPS analysis revealed that the formation of the quinonoid structures and the richment of extractives onto the outermost surface of the pulps were responsible for the discoloration. The photochemical reactions mainly occurred on the outermost surfaces(less than 10nm) of the plant fibers.
