Xinhua Winshare, short for Xinhua Winshare Publishing and Media Co., Ltd., is a Chinese general publishing group which has 9 subordinate publishing houses, namely Sichuan People’s Publishing House, Sichuan Education Publishing House, Sichuan Literature & Art Publishing House, Sichuan Children’s Publishing House, Sichuan Science and Technology Publishing House, Sichuan Fine Arts Publishing House, Sichuan Lexicographical Publishing House, Sichuan Bashu Publishing House and Sichuan Tiandi Publishing House.
Xinhua Winshare owns advantages in areas of traditional Chinese culture, Bashu culture, children, traditional Chinese medicine, martial arts, Sichuan cuisine, Chinese language and literature, where it also enjoys broad awareness. On June 4, 2013, the State General Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of the People's Republic of China (SGAPPRFT) announced the funding list of China Classics International 2013. 8 titles from Sichuan People’s Publishing House, Sichuan Literature & Art Publishing House, Sichuan Fine Arts Publishing House and Tiandi Publishing House under Xinhua Winshare Publishing and Media Co., Ltd. were listed, making Xinhua Winshare the second place among the funded publishing groups. The 8 listed titles were Deng Xiaoping and the Transformation of China (Arabian /French Edition) of Sichuan People’s Publishing House; Lei Feng (English Edition), Han Shaogong’s Exploration in Chinese (English Edition), Chengdu, My home – The Chinese Feelings across the Pacific (English Edition), and I am My Own God (English Edition) of Sichuan Literature & Art Publishing House; Quintessence of Sichuan Opera (English Edition) and China Fashion Museum of Qiang people and Yi people(English Edition) of Sichuan Fine Arts Publishing House and The Best Mini-novels of Contemporary Writers (English Edition) of Sichuan Tiandi Publishing House.
Recently, the Committee of International Co-publishing in the Publishers Association of China, Chinese Academy of Press and Publication, and Periodical Office of Information on Publication selected the “Exported and Imported Excellent Books” for the 12th session. Among the 100 exported titles of 2012, 4 titles published by the subordinate publishing houses of Xinhua Winshare were listed, they wereFairy Tales that Widen Children’s Horizon published by Sichuan Children’s Publishing House, Secret Recipe for Marinade of Sichuan-style Braised Food published by Sichuan Science and Technology Publishing House, Cherishing the Validity Period of Gratitude and Stories of 100 Foreign Figures Changing Their Fates published by Sichuan Tiandi Publishing House. Collaboration with prestigious international publishers
The company has established long-term strategic partnership with some well-recognized publishers including McGraw-Hill and Cengage Learning. For example, on the platform of Cengage Learning Gale Virtual Reference Library, readers could have access to the e-books of Xinhua Winshare on the economic, social and cultural development of Sichuan province and contemporary China.
Cooperation has also been reached between Xinhua Winshare and the publishers of the Arab countries. “The Arabian edition ofA Picture Book of Deng Xiaoping and Deng Xiaoping and the Transformation of China has opened a window for Arabian readers to fully understand the great thoughts and practices of Deng Xiaoping, the great man, and further understand the development experiences of China in those years. The book is also a successful co-publishing model between China and the Arab countries,” said Aasheim Shalaby, president of Arabian Publishers Association.
Overseas development of Xinhua Winshare
In 2012, Xinhua Winshare invested 300,000 dollars in the establishment of Washington Winshare Media Development Ltd in America, hoping to accumulate experience in cultural exchange and overseas development. Business of the company covers copyright trade, foreign co-publishing and co-distribution; introduction to advanced foreign cultural projects and publications; research and development of new media; establishment of a Chinese newspaper for the local Chinese in northeastern regions including Maryland, Washington DC, and Virginia. In addition, since July 2012, the company has published 33 issues of Chinese Outlook News, which has great awareness in local Chinese communities.
Deals in recent years
In 2012, Xinhua Winshare had published 5800 titles in total and reached export deals of 58 titles with foreign countries, Wenchuan Earthquake (English Edition), New Beautiful Home (English Edition), A Picture Book of Deng Xiaoping (Arabic /French Edition) and Encyclopedia of China’s Islam (Egyptian Edition) to name a few.
In 2013, Xinhua Winshare had reached agreements or intents on the export of 118 titles in total, including 65 titles with signed contracts and 42 titles with intents, with publishers from France, UK, Japan, South Korea, Egypt, Tunisia, Vietnam, Thailand and other countries.
In the years to come, Xinhua Winshare will further focus on its international book dealings, copyright trade training and cooperation with the overseas publishers and copyright agencies.
