斯坦利·亨培克,美国著名中国通,20世纪上半叶美国对华政策的重要设计者和执行者。作为远东问题专家,他的中国观深受青年时期在中国经历的影响。在杭州近五年的工作和生活开启了他一生事业的方向,并最终铸就了其辉煌的外交生涯。在杭州生活期间,他目睹中国人民的觉醒与革命,也认识到了中国的政治混乱和经济落后。他的参政为他积累了丰富的对华外交经验。亨培克的中国情结导致了他在未来处理远东问题时经常同情和支持中国,但同时他对中国的偏见导致他不能正确理解中国民族主义的合理要求。
Stanley Hempel, the famous American leader in the United States and an important designer and executor of U.S. policy toward China in the first half of the 20th century. As an expert on the Far East, his concept of China is greatly influenced by the experiences of youth in China. In the past five years of work and life in Hangzhou opened his career in the direction of the event and eventually cast its brilliant diplomatic career. While living in Hangzhou, he witnessed the awakening and revolution of the Chinese people as well as the political turmoil and economic backwardness in China. His political participation has accumulated rich diplomatic experience with China for him. Hempel’s Chinese complex led to his frequent sympathy and support for China in the future handling of the Far East. However, his prejudice against China led him not to correctly understand the reasonable demands of Chinese nationalism.
